Our latest four-legged recruits, Halo and Danny, are an additional measure to track down leaks, alongside technology already in use such as listening devices and sensors.

These clever Springer spaniels are trained to sniff out chlorine in potable water and are particularly effective in bushland, where access can be difficult.

Once the dogs detect a potential leak, our field crews are sent in to investigate further.

We’re using the latest technologies to help us detect leaks including innovative leak detection software and acoustic sensors which monitor our network.

We have a leak detection system called TaKaDu, which allows us to monitor flow and pressure changes in the network and detect leaks before they become bursts.

This technology provides alerts, reports and real-time insights about our network, meaning we can catch issues early, avoiding costly repairs and the inconvenience a burst may cause our customers, such as a water outage.

We’re helping schools across our service region take control of their water usage and identify leaks with the help of digital smart meters.

A smart water meter is a small device that attaches to the existing meter and transmits the readings wirelessly. Water consumption data can then be monitored live by teachers and students from an online portal.

Alerts are received if the smart meter detects irregular water use that could indicate a leak, meaning issues are found early on, saving water and money. Currently we have 15 schools taking part in the trial.

Underground pipes can leak and burst anywhere and anytime. Changes in rainfall, temperature, water pressure and ground movement are just some of the causes.

While we do all we can to prevent leaks and get them fixed quickly, we do prioritise the work depending on the urgency. For example, issues such as major bursts, public safety and traffic conditions can impact our response times.
