What's happening?

Urban Utilities is committed to excellence in water and wastewater services that meet the evolving needs of our customers and enhance the liveability of our communities.

As part of this commitment, we will be upgrading important infrastructure across our region to future proof against potential flood damage to ensure safe long-term wastewater services.  Our delivery partner, Downer WSP and their subcontractors, will soon commence essential works to upgrade the Christie Street Pump Station.

This pump station is located at 22A Christie St, Canungra and is a critical part of the sewer system for the Canungra area. The pump station shares driveway access via the adjacent Ambulance Station driveway. Due to new extensions of the Ambulance Station the existing access has been removed, resulting in the need to provide a permanent access solution.

The project will involve the installation of a new driveway to provide vehicle access to the existing sewage pumpstation besides the Queensland Ambulance Station on Christie Street, Canungra. The works also includes the relocation of a sewerage overflow discharge pipe at the rear of the pumpstation.

This pump station upgrade will future proof the networks’ reliability and ensure safe long-term service delivery to the community for the next 50 years.  By undertaking these works we will provide a more permanent access solution for the pump station and extend the service life of the asset.

Project delivery

Construction will commence from mid-April 2023 and is expected to take up to two months to complete, weather and site conditions permitting. Works will take place at the Christie Street Pump Station, located at 22A Christie Street, Canungra.  Crews, trucks and equipment will be in the area during the works.

What to expect

During construction, nearby residents and businesses may experience some noise and dust from heavy machinery, increased vehicle movements and minor vibrations.

Changed traffic conditions may be in place around work areas along Christie Road, Canungra. Traffic management will be in place to look after the safety of pedestrians and road users and maintain local access. There will also be temporary restrictions to on street parking during construction.

Some intermittent odour may occur when maintenance hole lids are removed or during ventilation. This activity is required to ensure the safety of crews working in confined spaces.

Please take care and observe all signposting, speed limits and any directions given by traffic controllers. Barriers and signage will be installed around work areas to keep everyone safe.

Work hours

Works will be carried out during the day between 6:30am and 6:30pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday works. In some situations, we may need to carry out works at night, between 7:00pm-5:00am.  Residents will be notified before any works take place.

Wastewater services

There will be no interruption to individual property wastewater services during these works. If required, Downer WSP may temporarily redirect and remove the flow of sewage by tankering from one location to another.

Work locations

These upgrade works will take place at the Christie Road Pump Station, located at 22A Christie Street, Canungra.

  • Holding area will be located near the Christie Road Pump Station, 22A Christie Street, Canungra, at the rear of the Ambulance Station.
Tree and vegetation removal

We understand local parks and resident fauna and flora are highly valued by the community.

To allow for these essential works, there may be tree and vegetation removal within private property near the pump station.

We have gone through an extensive process of design and approvals to ensure every effort has been made to minimise tree removal where possible. Trees marked for removal in the construction access area will be removed in accordance with Ipswich City Council and State Government requirements. These activities will be monitored and approved by a qualified Arborist and a Fauna Spotter.

Restoration activities

Post construction, we will restore all work areas as close to original condition as possible and will undertake landscaping to ensure the area blend with the existing environment as much as possible.

How will impacts be managed?
  • Downer WSP and their contractors will minimise the construction impacts to the extent possible, including managing noise and dust at the source, utilising traffic control and reviewing work methods as required.
  • Changed traffic conditions will be in place around work areas with the use of traffic control to manage the flow of traffic, ensure pedestrian safety and maintain local access.
  • Please take care and observe all signposting, speed limits and any directions given by traffic controllers. Barriers and signage will be installed around work areas to keep everyone safe.
