2019 Asia Pacific Cities Summit

Three Queensland Urban Utilities ground-breaking innovations are on show at this week’s 2019 Asia Pacific Cities Summit (2019APCS).

The summit has attracted more than 1000 delegates representing 100 cities including Mayors, business leaders, leading academics and industry professionals.

Queensland Urban Utilities CEO, Louise Dudley, delivered a speech this morning on how we’re embracing innovation in water and sewerage services.

“We’re turning conventional thinking on its head to pioneer the latest breakthroughs in water management, so our cities stay healthy and liveable for our people, and sustainable for our environment,” she said.

“This requires innovation and cutting-edge technology – both of which are at the heart of our work.

“Our Innovation Centre at Luggage Point houses $18 million worth of collaborative research involving 24 partner organisations from all over the world, including the University of Queensland Advanced Water Management Centre.”

Three of those innovations are on show at the summit, as part of an interactive stand so delegates can talk to our research specialists about;

  • anammox bugs,
  • algae-based wastewater treatment, and
  • seaweed farming as a nutrient offset.

“We’re the first utility in Australia to grow our own booming farm of anammox bugs – which eat the nitrogen in the wastewater, saving on chemical and energy use,” said Ms Dudley.

“In another project, we’re growing algae which will be used to help treat wastewater at our regional sewage treatment plants, as well as creating a useful by-product that can be used as a fertiliser and biogas.

“This is the kind of thinking that will see wastewater takes its place in the circular economy.”

Queensland Urban Utilities is the only water utility represented at the summit, which runs until Wednesday, July 10 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
