Queensland Urban Utilities is cleaning up sewage which has entered a waterway near Waite Street, in Ipswich.

The incident occurred during clean-up activities for a sewage overflow which impacted Deebing Creek on Monday.

We understand sewage entered the waterway via the stormwater network and we are investigating how this occurred.

We have reported the incident to the Department of Environment and Science and Ipswich City Council.

Our environment team is on site to guide clean-up activities and undertake water quality sampling.

Crews are working as quickly as possible to clean up the area, which includes vacuum pumping the waterway.

We are also continuing clean-up activities at Deebing Creek and are monitoring water quality.

Signage has been erected to advise local residents to stay away from the impacted area.

The original sewage overflow occurred following a blockage at our sewerage pump station at Lobley Street which we believe was caused by a large amount of fat in the sewer network.
