Pinkenba Murarrie water pipe

Queensland Urban Utilities has begun construction of a multi-million dollar cross-river water pipe to cater for population growth and development in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

The $20 million project will involve installing a new pipe 10m under the Brisbane River from Pinkenba on the north side to Murarrie in the south.

Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said the 3km long pipe will cater for future demand in the suburbs of Pinkenba, Eagle Farm and Murarrie, including the airport.

“This is our biggest water infrastructure project since Queensland Urban Utilities was formed in 2010,” she said.

“It’s a feat of engineering, with the new 800mm diameter pipe to be installed under the river using trenchless technology.

“The benefit of this project is that it will increase the capacity of the network to ensure it meets the needs of this growing area.”

Construction has started at Holt St, Pinkenba before pipe installation begins under the river mid-year.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2019.

Queensland Urban Utilities is investing $236 million dollars in water and sewerage projects across the service network this financial year.
