Queensland Urban Utilities is encouraging participants in this year’s Mother’s Day Classic to carry a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic litter.
The 4.5km and 8km walk and run will be held on Sunday, May 8 (Mother’s Day) at the Cultural Forecourt of South Bank Parklands.
Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said as many as 10 thousand walkers and runners are expected to participate.
“Single-use plastic water bottles are a common item of rubbish left behind at large-scale events,” she said.
“We want to encourage participants to carry reusable water bottles and refill them at our water station.
“Filling up on tap water is a simple, reliable and cost-effective way to stay hydrated and help the environment.”
Six mums from Queensland Urban Utilities are happily relinquishing their Mother’s Day sleep-in to support participants of this year’s event.
“We’ll be giving away reusable water bottles from 6.30am and we should be easy to find - we’ll be wearing black ‘Turn to Tap’ t-shirts amidst a sea of pink,” Ms Cull said.
The Mother’s Day Classic is Australia’s largest breast cancer research fundraiser.
“Queensland Urban Utilities is proud to support this event. Not only is it a great family fun day, but it raises essential funds for research into the prevention and treatment of breast cancer,” Ms Cull said.
