With toilet paper disappearing from some supermarket shelves, Urban Utilities is issuing a timely reminder to only flush the Three Ps – pee, poo and paper.

If you’ve been caught short and have to use tissues or wet wipes instead of toilet paper, please don’t flush them down the loo.

Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said sewer pipes were designed to carry just that – sewage.

“With many Australians stockpiling toilet paper, it could leave others high and dry,” she said.

“If you’re caught off guard by the paper panic and have to use anything other than loo roll, please remember to place it in the bin.

“The problem with wet wipes and tissues is they don’t disintegrate quickly like toilet paper after they’re flushed.”

Every day, Urban Utilities treats around 130 Olympic-sized swimming pools of sewage from more than 1.5 million customers.

Ms Cull said wet wipes can cause blockages not only in the sewer network, but your household plumbing.

“Last year, our crews cleared around 3,500 blockages from sewer pipes across our service region at a cost of more than $1 million, and wet wipes were a big contributor.

“If you have to clear a blockage in your private plumbing the repair bill could run into the thousands.”
